"Application essay," or "admissions essay," means different things to different people. Is it simply an essay written for an application? Is it a personal statement?
At DLA, we define "application essay" as an essay written for an application meeting two key criteria. The first is that the essay is limited in scope by a prompt or question. Second is that the essay is limited in scope by a word (or character) count limit generally not exceeding 300 words.
Application essays are also known as "admissions essays." So what we refer to as "application essay editing" is the same as "admissions essay editing." And what we refer to as "application essay proofreading" is the same as "admissions essay proofreading."
Application essays, or admissions essays, must be written in direct response to the prompt or question within the provided word or character count.
Both application essays (and admission essays) and "college admissions essays" are essays written for a college application or for college admission. What distinguishes application essays (or admission essays) from "college admissions essays" is their scope in both their content and length.
Application essays are written in response to a focused prompt or question in unison with a fixed word (or character) count limit generally not exceeding 300 words.
The college admissions essay is a longer (up to 650 words), unguided essay in which you provide a personal narrative of what has shaped your life so far. This can include meaningful experiences and influential people and shows what has defined your path and where you are headed.
The college admissions essay is a type of personal statement. Depending on the program being applied for, personal statements for graduate or other post-college programs are usually longer (around 725 words) and more comprehensive than a college essay, due to the applicant's greater life experiences and self-understanding.
A statement of purpose is another type of personal statement. They are personal statements whose intent is focused on a specific program (e.g., the MBA program at Chicago Booth), whereas personal statements can be more generalized (e.g., for an MBA program generally).
Our application essay services are for application essays as defined above. If you have a college admissions essay, please see our personal statements services for how we can help make that essay an outstanding one.
Editing & Feedback: This professional editing service provides a comprehensive, detailed edit and proofread of your application essay together with equally comprehensive, detailed feedback. The editing includes streamlining the essay to meet the stated word or character count requirements. The feedback identifies any item needing improvement that goes beyond the scope of editing, covering both writing and content, and ensuring the essay is fully responsive to the essay prompt or question.
The Editing & Feedback service for application essays includes two rounds of review.
Proofreading: Our Proofreading service provides detailed proofreading only (e.g., spelling and grammar errors). It does not include editing or feedback.
The turnaround time of our application essay editing services is two business days with Normal Delivery and one business day with Rush Delivery. Turnaround times are per round of review.
The most competitive application essays are ones that respond fully and directly to the essay prompt and do so within the stated word or character count requirement.
As easy as this may sound, we often find opportunities for our clients to answer the essay prompt more completely, having inadvertently left out key relevant details. And doing so without running over the word count limit can be challenging.
DLA's application essay editors are particularly skilled at streamlining your essay to ensure it fully responds to the prompt without going over any length requirements.
