While "CV" (or "curriculum vitae") and "resume" are often used interchangeably, and do have some overlap between them, there are a few characteristics that distinguish them.
A "CV" (or "curriculum vitae") is "a brief account of one's life: a brief statement including biographical data" (source: Merriam-Webster Unabridged Dictionary). It includes the "brief account of one's education and professional experience" of a resume and adds biographical data. Examples of the biographical data included in a CV are date of birth, nationality, country of residence and a professional headshot, in addition to your address (or at least your city and state), telephone number and email address.
A resume includes a "brief account of one's education and professional experience" only, without, generally, any biographical data (source: Merriam-Webster Unabridged Dictionary). There is an exception to this norm about biographical data. Commonly included in a resume are your address (or at least your city and state), telephone number and email address.
Both CVs and resumes may include your hobbies and interests. This is generally encouraged, particularly in the United States, where hobbies and interests communicated in a CV or resume offer an opportunity for the interviewer to establish a personal connection with the interviewee.
Editing & Feedback: This professional editing service provides a comprehensive, detailed edit and proofread of your CV or resume together with equally comprehensive, detailed feedback.
The editing includes streamlining experience descriptions to ensure they are compelling and engage whoever is reading your CV or resume. The feedback identifies any item needing improvement that goes beyond the scope of editing, covering both writing and content, and including any details to be added to make your CV or resume more successful. It also includes formatting and layout recommendations where appropriate.
The Editing & Feedback service for CVs and resumes includes two rounds of review.
Proofreading: Our Proofreading service provides detailed proofreading only (e.g., spelling and typographical errors). It does not include editing or feedback.
Yes! See our specialized ERAS Application editing services for your medical residency or fellowship application.
Our turnaround times are two business days with Normal Delivery and one business day with Rush Delivery. Turnaround times are per round of review.
Two features characterize a professionally written resume: form and content.
"Form" means using a professional formatting and layout for your CV. It includes the size of the page margins; the typeface and size of the font used (Arial 11 pt is preferred); the spacing, capitalization and stylization (e.g., ALL CAPS vs Title Case vs Sentence case, bold vs italics) of headings; and the correct use and consistency of punctuation (e.g., consistently using an en dash for date ranges instead of sometimes using a hyphen and sometimes using an en dash).
"Content" means all the information communicated in the resume. It means ensuring all the right details are communicated in a clear, concise manner. It also means ensuring no unnecessary or unwanted details are included.
DLA's editors are well experienced at ensuring both the form and content meet the standards of a professionally written resume.
Our approach is to work with whatever CV or resume template you have selected as a starting point. With our CV/Resume Editing & Feedback service, we will then make whatever recommendations we see need to be made to adjust the formatting and layout of your CV or resume to meet the standards of the position you are seeking.
If you elect CV/Resume Proofreading, we will ensure there are no proofreading errors (e.g., punctuation and capitalization errors) in your use of the template.
