How I Work with ERAS Applications

I approach ERAS applications as integrated documents, not a collection of isolated fields. Every section—geographic and setting preferences, selected and impactful experiences, publications and presentations, and hobbies and interests—contributes to how program directors assess your readiness for training and fit for their programs.

When I review an ERAS application, I look for patterns. I assess whether the right details are included and how they contribute to presenting what makes you a strong, compelling candidate for residency or fellowship. Deliberate choices in wording, structure, and emphasis can impact program directors' determination of whether to invite you to interview.

Three pillars serve as the focus of my feedback:

  • What program directors will notice first and how those elements shape their initial impression
  • Where descriptions undersell, include irrelevant details, or create confusion, even when the underlying experience is strong
  • How to revise entries so they show clarity, purpose, and key details, without repetition or unnecessary explanation

I do not rewrite ERAS applications. Instead, I provide detailed, specific guidance that shows you exactly what to change and why. You revise your application based on that guidance, and, with ERAS Application Editing & Feedback, I refine it further in the second round. This process preserves your voice while ensuring your application reflects the level of care and thought that will make your ERAS Application stand out.

ERAS Application Services

I offer two ERAS application services, depending on the level of review and guidance you need. Both are designed to help your application communicate care, judgment, and readiness for training—without rewriting your content or diluting your voice.

ERAS Application Editing & Feedback

Two Rounds of Review

This service is for applicants who want detailed, strategic guidance on how to strengthen their ERAS application as a whole—not just correct surface-level issues.

I review your ERAS application as program directors do, focusing on how each section contributes to the overall impression your application creates.

This service includes:

  • In-depth review of all ERAS sections, including:
    • Contact Information
    • Geographic & Setting Preferences
    • Honors and Awards
    • Experiences
    • Most Meaningful Descriptions
    • Impactful Experiences
    • Hobbies & Interests
    • Publications & Presentations
    • Hometowns
  • Detailed, specific guidance on:
    • What to revise, add, remove, or clarify
    • Where descriptions undersell strong experiences
    • Where wording, structure, or emphasis creates confusion
  • Feedback on consistency, clarity, structure, tone, and emphasis across the application
  • Guidance on how to present experiences so they show key, relevant details
  • Use of active vs. passive voice
  • A second round of review to refine revisions and address remaining issues

I provide detailed, specific guidance that shows you exactly what to change and why, then help refine the result so your application demonstrates what makes you a compelling candidate.

ERAS Application Proofreading

One Round of Review

This service is intended for applicants who are confident in their content and structure and want a final, careful polish before submission.

Proofreading focuses on identifying and correcting errors in basic English usage, including:

  • Grammar and punctuation
  • Spelling and typographical errors
  • Subject-verb agreement
  • Pronoun agreement
  • Verb tense
  • Singular vs. plural

This service does not include editing, restructuring, or strategic feedback.

David Lombardino, Editor & Consultant

Who You’ll Be Working With

I’m David Lombardino, founder of DLA Editors & Proofers. Since 2008, I’ve worked directly with applicants pursuing medical residency and fellowship, reviewing and editing more than 1,000 ERAS applications across specialties, applicant backgrounds, and levels of competitiveness.

I approach ERAS applications with a clear understanding of what program directors look for when deciding who to interview. My work focuses on how details are selected, framed, and emphasized—and how small missteps or omissions can weaken an otherwise strong application.

I do not treat ERAS as a form to be completed. I treat it as a professional document that signals judgment, maturity, attention to detail, and readiness for training. Every section matters, and every choice communicates something about you as a candidate.

When you work with me, you work one-on-one. I review your application carefully, identify where entries undersell your experience or create unintended concerns, and provide precise guidance on how to revise them so your application reflects the level of care and competence program directors expect to see.

Applicants come to me when they want their ERAS application to do more than list experiences—to show program directors why they should take a closer look and invite them to interview.

How to Export Your ERAS Application for Review

To submit your ERAS application for my services, you must export the application itself, not the CV.

In MyERAS, select “View/Print Application” to generate a PDF of your full ERAS application. Do not use the “View/Print CV” option.

The application export shows all ERAS-specific fields exactly as program directors see them, including formatting, field limits, and section structure. This is the only format that allows me to assess and annotate your application accurately.

I will place my comments and recommendations directly on the PDF you export. You will then apply those changes in MyERAS.

Refer to the screenshot below to confirm you’re selecting the correct option.
