How Interview Coaching Works

I provide interview coaching through three recorded, two-hour, one-on-one sessions designed to move you from unprepared to ready to excel in your interviews and be ranked high enough to match.

Session 1: Strategy and Foundation

We define your goals, identify strengths and weaknesses in your application, pinpoint areas program directors will question, and establish a clear strategy for how you will present yourself across interviews.

Session 2: First Mock Interview & Assessment

I conduct a full mock interview tailored to a program you select. I then give detailed, specific feedback on your answers and questions and how you deliver them, and I tell you exactly what adjustments to make and how to prepare for the next mock interview.

After the mock interview, I provide a detailed assessment of your answers, delivery, and overall impression, along with precise guidance on what to change and why.

3. Second Mock Interview & Refinement

I conduct a second full mock interview to test your revised approach, identify remaining gaps, and refine your answers and delivery so you present as a candidate program directors will want in their programs.

I record each session and share the recording and written notes so you can review them and apply the feedback between sessions. You may purchase additional mock interview sessions if needed.

INTERVIEW COACHING SERVICES

I offer a comprehensive, high-touch interview coaching service designed to help you excel in residency and fellowship interviews—not just answer questions correctly, but present yourself as a candidate program directors want in their programs.

This service is built as a three-session sequence, with each session preparing you for the next stage of the interview process and progressively strengthening your performance.

Session 1: Strategy, Positioning & Preparation

We begin with a two-hour, one-on-one Zoom session focused on building your interview strategy from the ground up.

In this session, I work with you to:

  • Identify the strengths you should emphasize and the weaknesses or red flags program directors will focus on
  • Define the themes you need to reinforce across your interviews
  • Develop strong, specific answers to high-yield questions, including those tied to weaknesses or red flags
  • Establish a clear approach to ethical, behavioral, and "Why should we choose you?" questions
  • Create a framework you will use consistently across all interviews

This session sets the foundation for everything that follows.

Session 2: First Mock Interview & Assessment

In the second two-hour session, I conduct a recorded mock interview tailored to a program you select. This can be:

  • A program where you already have an interview scheduled, or
  • A program where you strongly expect or hope to receive an interview invitation

During this mock interview, I test:

  • Your baseline interview performance
  • Your ability to apply the strategies developed in Session 1
  • Your responses to difficult questions, including those tied to weaknesses or red flags

After the mock interview, I provide a detailed assessment of your performance and tell you exactly what needs to change and how to change it.

By the end of this session, the service is designed to bring you to approximately 85% readiness to excel in your interviews, assuming you complete the preparation work I assign.

Session 3: Second Mock Interview & Refinement

In the third two-hour session, I conduct a second recorded mock interview focused on refinement.

This session allows us to:

  • Test your revised approach
  • Identify any remaining issues needing correction
  • Refine delivery and approach in high-stakes responses
  • Strengthen how you present yourself as a candidate program directors will want in their programs

After this session, the service is designed to bring you to approximately 95–100% readiness to excel in your interviews, provided you have completed the assigned preparation work.

Additional Mock Interviews

If desired, you can purchase additional mock interview sessions to continue refining your performance or prepare for additional specific programs.

Session Recordings

Unless you request otherwise, I record each session and share the recording with you privately, along with detailed notes, so you can review your progress and continue improving between interviews.

Who You’ll Be Working With

I’m David Lombardino, founder of DLA Editors & Proofers. I’ve worked one-on-one with applicants since 2008 to help them succeed in interviews for medical residency and medical fellowship programs.

My interview coaching draws on nearly two decades of direct work with applicants, long-standing professional relationships with physicians and program directors, and repeated experience helping candidates where strong credentials alone were not enough.

I work most often with applicants who fall into one of two groups:

  • Candidates with competitive applications interviewing at extremely competitive programs, where small differences determine who gets ranked high enough to match
  • Candidates with weaknesses in some aspect of their application—such as test scores, gaps in training, limited relevant clinical experience, cultural differences, or performance anxiety—and want to ensure those issues do not cost them a match

I coach applicants for:

  • Medical residency in the United States and Canada
  • Medical fellowship in the United States, Canada and Saudi Arabia

I conduct interview coaching primarily in English. When appropriate, I also provide coaching in French for applicants interviewing in Canada.

My approach goes beyond rehearsing answers. I help you understand what program directors want to see in a candidate, how they evaluate applicants during interviews, and how to present yourself in a way that leads them to rank you highly.

I do not give generic advice or scripted responses. I work directly with you to identify exactly what needs to change in how you answer questions, how you present yourself, and how you engage with interviewers—then help you apply those changes.
